Why we built a wool mill.
This world is full of synthetic fibers shedding microplastics into our soils, our water and every part of our lives. For millenia humans have used natural fibers to make the protective layers that we call clothing. When we brought home sheep, the kind that need regular shearing, we began looking for services like shearing and came up short. After a long search we found a shearer that would come to us from Idaho as long as we gathered up some other owners and hosted a shearing day. Once shearing was complete we had all the fleece and started looking for sources to have it processed. The nearest large mill we could find was a three hour drive and had an 8 month waiting list. We figured out that none of this was sustainable.
Other people we talked to were having the same problem. After many conversations we made the decision to invest in our community by starting up a local fibershed ourselves.
